Not just dirt

Bird droppings can permanently damage a panel

Dust dims a panel. Droppings do something worse: they sit in one spot, block that spot completely, and don’t rinse off in the rain.

  • A blocked cell becomes a heater. Panels wire their cells in series, so every cell carries the current the rest of the string produces. A cell buried under a dropping can’t contribute — but the current still pushes through it, and that energy comes out as heat instead of electricity.
  • That heat is a hot spot. The spot can run far hotter than the panel around it. Held there long enough, it scorches the backsheet, degrades the encapsulant sealing the cell, and can crack the cell outright.
  • The damage doesn’t wash off. Clean away the dropping and the shading is gone, but a cracked cell or a cooked encapsulant seal is permanent. That panel produces less for the rest of its life.
  • Birds don’t stop on their own. Nesting under an array means droppings land in the same places continuously. Cleaning treats the symptom; bird proofing closes off the roost so it stops recurring.

How it should be done

Two things to ask any panel cleaner

Panel cleaning done wrong costs more than it saves. Whoever you hire — us or anyone else — these are the two questions worth asking first.

  • “Do you use filtered water?” Texas tap water is hard. Spray it on hot glass and the water evaporates while the dissolved minerals stay behind as a chalky film — so the panels come out spotted, shading the very cells the cleaning was meant to clear. We use filtered, deionized water, which dries off the glass leaving nothing behind. It also means no detergents on a surface the manufacturer never intended them for.
  • “What insurance do you use?” Not all insurance is created equal. Exterior-cleaning policies often don’t extend to rooftop work unless specifically endorsed, and even those that do commonly exclude damage to the equipment being worked on — your panels. So “we’re insured” can be perfectly true while a cracked panel stays your problem. Ask what the policy covers, and ask to see the certificate. Peak Systems is glad to show you our documentation before we start.

The problem with dirty panels

Your panels only earn when the sun can reach them

Solar panels sit in the weather year-round collecting dust, pollen, water spots, and bird droppings — and rain alone doesn't wash that film away. The buildup blocks sunlight, so your system produces less power than you paid for.

  • Increased efficiency. Removing the grime lets your panels capture more sunlight and puts real production back on your electric bill.
  • Longer system life. Baked-on grime and debris drive avoidable wear on the panel surface. Gentle, panel-safe cleaning helps your system reach its full lifespan.
  • Problems caught early. Regular visits mean cracked glass, loose wiring, or nesting birds get spotted before they become expensive repairs.

Safe, thorough removal of dust, pollen, water spots, and bird droppings — so your panels capture more sunlight and produce the power you paid for. Regular cleanings keep output up and extend the working life of your system.

Metal mesh bird-proofing installed along the edge of rooftop solar panels to block nesting.

Solar Bird Proofing

Birds nesting under panels leave droppings, chew wiring, and pack debris against your roof. Professional mesh exclusion keeps them out for good — protecting both production and equipment.
